Here is a partially solution : download tuxbox commander to the 500 in order to view the file. (ask coco for the name and location)
2) make a backup of the image if possible

have you tried the normal
root = user name
dreambox = password
The information was found at another site
all tested and works
1. To delete the password the one that you don't now you login with tuxbox commander, go to var/etc/ and move the cursor to passwd.
2. Pres 4 to the control to get edit at passwd.
3. At the first line you will find something like this:
root:EIfidfjeSAEFKEOlasdf5ewr3rWEW:0:0:root:/root:/bin/sh
4. Press ΟΚ and then you can edit the line. Τhe < on the left of the 0 from the control works like delete and the > works like spacebar. With the left , right you can move left right , and with up and down arrows from the control you change the characters .
5. Delete the EIfidfjeSAEFKEOlasdf5ewr3rWEW which is the unknown password but dont delete the : at the beginning and end of the password .
6. Pres Οκ and then exit. It will ask you to save new changes pres yes and then ok .Again exit, again yes.
7. Open DCC give the ΙP of the receiver , yous root for username and let the pass empty . Pres reconnect.
8. Go to Telnet type passwd, and write the password that you want pres enter and retype the password and enter .
9. Then we go to network configuration and type the new password , reconnect and everything is ΟΚ now.
If you can not connect with FTP check again the line of the passwd at tuxbox.
The line that work at me is root:$1$$34NPeumc9sBBCAw.oUaM80:0:0::/root:/bin/sh were $1$$34NPeumc9sBBCAw.oUaM80 is the code that is "dreambox", at me .
